"Welcome to our PopUP! We are here for you, Philadelphia!" —Yannick Nézet-Séguin

The Philadelphia Orchestra’s Free PopUP Concert on Thursday, April 7, at the Kimmel Center kicked off with a special Conduct Us event in Commonwealth Plaza. Several audience members made their conducting debuts with Philadelphia Orchestra string players with the help of Assistant Conductor Lio Kuokman. In the evening’s encore, lucky Conduct Us participant 16-year-old Lowell Hoyt (a member of the Keystone State Boychoir!) led the full Orchestra onstage in Verizon Hall in a rousing rendition of “The Toreadors” from Bizet’s Carmen.

The PopUP featured classical favorites enhanced by the Orchestra’s LiveNote™ app, allowing smartphone users to access custom-created content in real time, presenting musical and historical highlights. Also at the concert, a new LiveNote kids track was introduced. Yannick and the Orchestra performed selections from Grieg’s Peer Gynt, Sibelius’s Finlandia, Suite No. 1 from Bizet’s Carmen, and Copland’s Appalachian Spring.

The PopUP Concert also included a special announcement about the expansion of the Orchestra’s community and educational initiatives. For more on HEAR, click here.
