Saratoga--Opening Night and the Race Course
The Orchestra returned to Saratoga with much fanfare and excitement on Wednesday. The people of Saratoga love The Philadelphia Orchestra! Already the Orchestra has performed two special concerts, and several Orchestra members took to the famous Saratoga Race Course. We can’t wait to see what’s in store over the next few weeks!
8/7/13, Saratoga Springs: Our close friend, conductor Stéphane Denève, leads the Orchestra in its first rehearsal of the residency with another of our close friends, the fabulous violinist Gil Shaham.
8/7/13, Saratoga Springs: Principal Clarinet Ricardo Morales, bass clarinet Paul R. Demers, Associate Principal Clarinet Sam Caviezel, and stagehand Jim Barnes enjoy a light-hearted chat at rehearsal.

8/7/13, Saratoga Springs: Every season the Saratoga Race Course names a race after the Orchestra. At the end of the race, Philadelphia Orchestra President and CEO Allison Vulgamore and Saratoga Performing Arts Center President Marcia White present the trophy to the winner.

8/7/13, Saratoga Springs: Gil Shaham chats with violinist Dmitri Levin prior to Opening Night. Gil was fabulous playing the Sibelius Violin Concerto, and the Orchestra sounded fantastic. The program: Sibelius’s "Lemminkäinen's Return," from “Lemminkäinen” Suite, Op. 22, Sibelius’s Violin Concerto, and Dvořák's Symphony No. 8.
8/7/13, Saratoga Springs: Young concertgoers stayed to the very end. The Opening Night audience was filled with young people, mostly students from the New York State Summer School of the Arts--School of Orchestra Studies. They brought a wonderful, and vocal, energy to the concert!

8/8/13, Saratoga Springs: Conductor Keith Lockhart and composer Richard Danielpour discuss his new composition “Serenade.” The piece was commissioned specifically for the “150th Anniversary of the Race Course” concert by the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and was given its world premiere that evening.
