Violinist Philip Kates Receives Kuhn Award
The Orchestra’s C. Hartman Kuhn Award was presented on May 12 to violinist Philip Kates onstage in Verizon Hall. Board Chairman Richard B. Worley presented the Award, saying, “This year’s recipient is an extraordinary citizen of our Orchestra, a first-rate musician who performs at the highest level. And he contributes in equal measure off the stage, serving the music and our organization with great commitment and loyalty.” He went on to describe the numerous ways Kates is selflessly dedicated to the organization and to music itself, including visits to schools, hospitals, and in particular one trip he made to Sichuan Province in China one month after a devastating earthquake, bringing music to children and recovering victims.
